Td5 engine tuningand 8HP conversions

Land Rover Defender Td5 and MEMS specialists. We repair ECUs, remove immobilisers for engine swap projects, write calibrations, and install and tune ZF 8HP gearboxes with Turbolamik.

Services

Every job starts with a conversation about your vehicle, what has been changed on it and what you want it to do. Tell us the details and we will tell you what is involved.

Immobiliser removal for engine swaps

MEMS / Land Rover Defender Td5

Putting a Td5 into another vehicle usually means leaving the original body control unit, alarm and key fob behind. We remove the immobiliser function from the MEMS ECU so the engine starts and runs as a standalone unit.

  • For Td5 engine swaps into other chassis, kit cars, boats and project builds.
  • Bench work on the ECU you send us, or done in the workshop.
  • Advice on the minimum wiring the engine needs to run in its new home.

ECU and electronic repair

Diagnosis and component-level repair

A failed ECU does not always need replacing. We diagnose faults on the bench and repair the unit where it can be repaired, keeping your original part and its coding.

  • No-start, no-communication and intermittent faults.
  • Failed driver circuits, damaged connectors and corrosion.
  • Wiring and electrical fault finding on the vehicle.
  • Setting up a replacement Td5 ECU to suit your vehicle when the original cannot be saved.

Engine calibration

Td5 tuning

The Td5 is a tough engine with fairly simple electronics, and it responds very well to tuning, even on standard hardware. Land Rover set it up conservatively from the factory, so a well-written calibration releases noticeably more torque and a sharper throttle without changing a single part.

Every map is built around your engine and what is fitted to it, never a generic file taken off the shelf. If you add parts later, the calibration can be revised to make use of them.

  • For both Td5 variants, 10P and 15P, in the Defender and the Discovery 2.
  • Standard engines, or modified ones with an uprated intercooler, turbo, injectors, intake or exhaust.
  • Character set to suit you: low-down torque for towing and off-road, or more top-end for the road.
  • Calibrations matched to an 8HP gearbox conversion.

8HP Turbolamik installation, tuning and support

ZF 8-speed automatic conversion

We install the ZF 8HP automatic gearbox with a Turbolamik controller, set it up for your engine, and stay on hand once you are driving. More about the conversion.

  • Full installation and commissioning.
  • Shift tuning matched to the engine calibration.
  • Ongoing support and adjustments after the conversion.

Eight gears behind a Td5

The ZF 8HP gives a Defender a low first gear for crawling and towing and a tall top gear for quieter motorway driving, with quick, smooth shifts in between.

The Turbolamik controller lets the 8HP work with engines it was never designed for. We fit the gearbox, set up the controller, tune the shift behaviour with the engine calibration, and support you after the job is done.

What a Td5 calibration changes

Most owners come to us because the vehicle feels slow on hills, laboured when loaded, or hesitant pulling out. This is what a calibration does about it.

More torque where you use it

The engine gets the fuel and boost it can safely use, so it pulls harder through the middle of the rev range instead of running out of breath.

A sharper response

The engine answers the pedal sooner and revs more freely. Joining fast roads and overtaking take less planning.

Easier towing

With more torque low down, a loaded Defender or a heavy trailer holds its gear on climbs instead of dropping down a gear.

Often, better economy

When the engine makes its torque with less pedal, many owners use less fuel once the novelty settles down. Results vary with vehicle, setup and driving style.

Questions owners ask

If your question is not here, send it with your enquiry.

Is tuning a Td5 worth it?

For most owners, yes. The Td5 was set up with plenty in reserve, so a calibration alone makes a clear difference to how the vehicle drives, and it is one of the best-value improvements you can make to an older Defender or Discovery 2.

Which Td5 engines do you work on?

Both Td5 variants, the earlier 10P and the later 15P. Either can be found in a Defender or a Discovery 2, and we work on both, standard or modified. We also work on Td5 engines that have been swapped into other vehicles.

Do I need to fit upgraded parts first?

No. A standard engine in good health gains a lot from the calibration alone. Parts such as a bigger intercooler or an uprated turbo let us safely go further, and we map to whatever is fitted on the day.

Can you set it up for towing or off-road use?

Yes. Tell us how the vehicle is used. A towing or expedition vehicle gets a calibration focused on low-down torque and smooth delivery, and a road vehicle can be set up for a stronger top end.

Do you check the engine before tuning?

Yes. Tuning makes a healthy engine better but will not cure a fault, so we look at the engine's live data first: boost, fuelling and sensor readings. Anything that needs fixing is put right before the new calibration goes on.

My Td5 ECU has failed. Do I need a new one?

Not always. Many faults can be repaired on the bench, keeping your original ECU. Where it cannot be saved, we can set up a replacement unit to suit your vehicle.

How it works

Whether you are local or sending an ECU from abroad, the process is the same.

  1. Get in touch

Tell us the vehicle, the ECU and what you need doing. Photos of the ECU label help.

  2. Agree the job

We confirm what is involved, the price and the turnaround before any work starts.

  3. Bring it in or post it

Drop the vehicle at the workshop, or send the ECU well packed with your contact details inside.

  4. Work and return

We carry out the work, test it, and return the vehicle or ECU. Support continues after.

Send an enquiry

The more detail you give us about the vehicle and what has been modified, the quicker we can give you a clear answer.
